Most of the used car industry in Canada, especially online, is dominated by large newspaper and publishing companies. With their extensive resources, they are able to corner the used car market and duplicate their offline success online.

Buying A Used Car in Canada

We found a number of options for buying a used car online. Following are our picks for the biggest selection and best prices:

Motoseller.com has a presence in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. You can search an extensive national database of cars, trucks, SUVs...even boats and watercraft. When you find the vehicle you want you simply send a quick email to the seller. The site is easy to navigate and they are constantly updating their system with new functionality.

Based in Ontario, Auto Trader also has an extensive inventory of vehicles to choose from. You can also search by category or region to find a dealer near you. They also put out the famous Auto Trader publications found throughout Canada. If you're looking beyond Ontario there is a sister site, Canada Trader.

Globemegawheels is another great resource. Serving as the auto channel for The Globe and Mail's online entity, you can search for new and used cars, as well as read industry news and car reviews.

Autonet.ca is similar to globemegawheels in its appearance and functionality. Falling under the umbrellas of the hugely popular news and information site, CANOE (Canadian Online Explorer), Autonet offers extensive automotive resources.

Selling A Used Car in Canada

All of the above entities also allow you to sell your vehicle. You can place an ad on each of these sites with your vehicle and contact information. Let's take a look at how the process works at each:

Motoseller.com: Costs to place your ad range from $19.95-$39.95, depending on whether they are running a sale or not. Your ad stays listed until your vehicle sells.

Auto Trader: Rates vary because your ad is placed online as well as in their magazine. There are deadline considerations for submission. The same is true for Canada Trader.

Globemegawheels: Advertising is free. You do have to become a member to place your ad, but membership is free as well. Your listing with stay in their database for 45 days and can be renewed at any time.

Autonet.ca: Probably the largest exposure for your ad. Costs vary.
